What is Scottish Country Dancing?

It’s Fun!

Have you been to a ceilidh and really enjoyed the atmosphere? Well, Scottish Country Dancing SCD is very similar, but with a little more precision in the movement and steps. You will recognise many of the moves, but you may notice some different footwork.

It's Sociable!

Rest assured that you will always be made very welcome, whether you are an enthusiastic beginner or an experienced dancer. The dances are usually in a set of 4 couples, although you can dance in 3,5 and even 7 (three, five and even seven!?) couple sets. The sets can be arranged in either two long lines facing your partner or in a square formation with your partner by your side. SCD is all about teamwork, you dance with your partner within the rest of the set. Remember to smile and if you can manage eye contact even better. As a beginner there will always be people there ready to help. Look out for the clues. A subtle wave of a hand may suggest a right hands across or a shrug of the shoulder the right way to enter a reel. Once you have mastered the basics you can dance anywhere in the world and remember you do not need to bring a partner because there will always be somebody to dance with.

It's Exercise!

Plenty of physical exercise goes with out saying, but don’t forget about the brain workout. There is a lot to remember when you start but I promise you it does get easier.

It's Not Expensive!

The only equipment you need is a pair of flat soft soled shoes, something like ballet pumps would be ideal. Often class teachers have spare pairs of shoes that you can borrow for a few weeks. Try not to wear trainers as these are designed to grip the floor and can restrict your ability to glide across the room.
All classes and dances are priced to cover costs and no more.
